The Shortest Distance Is a Straight Line

Wing Chun is built on one geometric insight: the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and the most important line in a fight runs down the center of your body — from the crown of your head to your groin. This is the centerline, and whoever controls it controls the fight.

Most martial arts attack from angles — roundhouse kicks, hooking punches, spinning back fists. Wing Chun attacks straight down the center: vertical punches, straight palms, chain punches that fire like a piston. Because the centerline is the shortest path, Wing Chun strikes arrive first. By the time an opponent’s circular attack has traveled its arc, the Wing Chun punch has already landed three times.

Bruce Lee’s Foundation

Bruce Lee studied Wing Chun under Ip Man in Hong Kong before he created Jeet Kune Do. The one-inch punch — Lee’s most famous demonstration — is a Wing Chun technique. The mechanics are identical: explosive power generated from the elbow and wrist, not the shoulder, delivered through a straight line that travels no more than four inches. Lee took Wing Chun’s centerline theory and extended it into a universal fighting principle.

The Wooden Dummy

The Muk Yan Jong — wooden dummy — is Wing Chun’s signature training tool. It is a wooden post with three arms and a leg, representing an opponent’s body. Practitioners drill sequences on the dummy to develop structure, timing, and the reflex to move along the centerline. The dummy does not hit back, but it does not lie either. If your structure is wrong, the dummy will hurt your arms. If your angle is off, the dummy will jam your technique.

Training on the wooden dummy is a conversation with geometry. Every movement is measured. Every position is precise. The dummy teaches what no human partner can: the absolute truth of angles and distances.
